• Probably the best and most widely used author identification system at the moment is ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID): As of May 2013, ORCID has over 65 member organizations including many publishers (Elsevier, Springer, etc.), research institutions, commercial companies (e.g. Thomson Reuters) and academic societies. It is an independent nonprofit organization and its registry is freely usable and interoperable with other ID systems. It launched its registry services and started issuing user identifiers in October 2012 and has known significant success. On its website you can find a lot of useful information and rich documentation.
